On January 15, 1865, the Cape Fear region was the site of one of the most important Civil War battles along the North Carolina coastline, the Battle of Fort Fisher. Marking the end of the Civil War and the fall of the Cape Fear area, visitors can learn all about the history of this battle - and watch as that history comes to life - at this annual event that commemorates the anniversary of this important moment in time.

Currie

The small community of Currie, North Carolina, will take center stage in 2026 as it commemorates a defining moment in American history during the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. This milestone event will be celebrated as part of the North Carolina First in Freedom Festival, with a week-long series of events from February 21–28, 2026, and major on-site commemorations at Moores Creek National Battlefield from February 26–28.

Go behind the scenes of one of the most famous attractions along the Cape Fear River with this in-depth tour of Wilmington’s most treasured landmark, the USS Battleship North Carolina.
