Fall is the version of Oak Island the locals keep to themselves. The hordes thin after Labor Day, the water stays warm, and the screened porch on the beach side of this bungalow finally makes sense once the afternoons cool off.

Two queen bedrooms, up to two dogs, and beach access directly across the street that you will mostly have to yourself on a Tuesday.

Constructed for couples, retirees, remote workers, and anyone who never needed a school calendar to choose their week. High-speed WiFi, parking for two cars, and nobody competing for a beach access.

Honest about the weather: some October days here are seventy-eight and some are sixty-four. Bring a sweatshirt and you will be fine either way. If you need guaranteed heat, book us in July instead.

What's happening while you're here

Live & Local runs Saturday evenings in October at Middleton Park, market from 4, music from 6. The Denver Nixion Band on the 3rd, The British Invaders on the 10th, The Cruise Brothers on the 24th. No concert on the 17th.

The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament takes over Southport and Oak Island October 1 through 3.

October 24 is the island's big Saturday. The Witches Ride rolls at noon, and the National Nighttime Out Spooktacular brings a complimentary fall market, costume contest, carnival games, and an outdoor concert that evening. Dogs are welcome at it.

And starting October 15, dogs come off leash on the beach strand through March 15. Town rules still apply.
